Bill (not a woman but a man who gets it) from As Told By came into the Power Hour hoping to get a better idea of what keywords to rank for, how to acquire better backlinks, and what value SEO could bring their business in general. And as a production agency with a lot of videos on the site, he was also curious about how to optimize for site speed.

What we did 

Analyzed the SERPS

As we started to brainstorm keyword ideas, I would throw them into Google to see what showed up. It seems like an obvious step, but with all the SEO tools out there, sometimes looking at the actual Google results falls by the wayside. Checking out what the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) look like allows you:

  • Analyze the competition

  • See what SERP features are being used

  • Get the most out of your keyword strategy

A lot of the keywords we analyzed had Google Business Profile “Snack Packs”, results based on location, and directory websites like Yelp, Clutch, and UpCity. Having a better understanding of what we were up against helped us make the best keyword choice for As Told By.

Found the Perfect Keyword

I’m a big believer in finding the “perfect keyword” for all my Power Hour clients. It’s like constructing that “perfect bite” of your meal. It’s got the perfect amount of everything and is super satisfying. Just like you want the perfect bite of salad (little bit of fruit, little bit of lettuce, little bit of crunchy crouton…just me?), you want to find that perfect keyword. For As Told By, that meant finding a keyword that:

  • People in Columbia were searching for with the intent to hire an agency

  • Wasn’t overly competitive (as in, they could rank for it without tons of work. We only had an hour.)

    After some trial and error, we landed on “Video Production Agency.” It may seem like the obvious choice, but there were dozens of variations we went through (videographer, film production services, content marketing agency, et cetera.)

Once the perfect keyword was found, we added it to As Told By’s Google Business Profile, meta description, and H1. Then, it was time to wait.

The Results

Within weeks, As Told By was ranking #1 for their target keyword, and they were the top result in the Google Business Profile Snack Pack. That means they were ranking above all of the competition AND all of the business directory sites.
